Empi Active™ Patient FAQ
What is Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS)?
TENS is a kind of electrotherapy for the application of electrical stimulation to the skin for pain control.
How does the Empi Active relieve pain?
The device uses electrotherapy to safely deliver mild electrical impulses that stimulate your peripheral nervous system, which reduces your brain’s perception of pain. It also triggers the body to produce endorphins, the body’s natural pain relievers that keep the pain signals from traveling from one nerve to the next.
Are there any side effects?
Unlike pharmaceuticals taken to relieve pain, the Empi Active provides pain relief with little to no side effects, and eliminates the risks associated with pharmaceuticals or surgery.
Will using the Empi Active reduce the need for pain medications?
TENS electrotherapy is a clinically proven, effective method for pain relief. Studies have shown in many cases that TENS electrotherapy may reduce the need for pain medications. Always consult your healthcare professional before making a change to your treatment plan.
Is the Empi Active difficult to operate?
The Empi Active was designed with the patient in mind. The easy to use device is pre-programmed to provide safe and optimal pain relief; one-touch activates the device to quickly relieve pain.
Can I continue with my daily activities while wearing the device?
You can take control of your pain with a lightweight and discrete device that can be worn comfortably underneath your clothes, so you can enjoy an active and productive lifestyle.
How can I get an Empi Active device?
Empi devices require a prescription from a physician. To investigate if an Empi device is right for you, print the Prescription and Assignment of Benefits (AOB) form located under Resources. Bring this form to your physician and request an evaluation for the use of the Empi Active™ device.
Is the Empi Active covered by insurance and Medicare?
Many medical insurance companies cover TENS devices for home use. Medicare covers TENS devices for acute and chronic pain. Our Patient Care Representatives and Medicare experts are available to help you navigate through this process and all of the necessary paperwork.
